Frequently Asked Questions

How can I enter the Inferno or Inferno Combination? Entries for the Inferno 2024 are now closed. To join the waitlist, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

What is the entry criteria? Anyone who has achieved an inferno bronze award or higher during the last 3 Inferno editions will receive a starting place. All other registrations will be drawn for the remaining places after the registration deadline has closed. Anyone who has not received a place will be added to a cancellation waiting list. To find out if you have achieved the qualifying criteria, check the historic race results.

What is the Combination and can I do it? The Inferno Combination consists of three disciplines: Langlauf, Giant Slalom and the Inferno Downhill.  The langlauf comprises three laps of the snow-covered village streets on cross-country skis (skating).  Finishing the langlauf entitles you to race the single-run Inferno GS on Thursday morning.  Langlauf and GS results are added to your Inferno result on Saturday to give your overall Inferno Combination position.

Complete novices can attend the free Kandahar langlauf lesson at the start of the week and, having acquired the basic skills and equipment (available to rent in the village), grit and determination will ensure everyone finishes with a smile.

Where do I pick up my Inferno start bib? Inferno Downhill bibs will be available for collection during the Kandahar Drinks Party on Thursday evening.  Please see the Programme for venue and timing details.  Inferno Combination competitors will collect their Langlauf bibs from the Sports Centre and GS bibs near the GS start, both on race day.

Are there any other races during Inferno Week? Several. Kandahar Club races take place at the start of the week, and are open to anyone.  For more information, see the Programme.

I want to sign up a friend or family member for an Inferno Week event. Why can't I see them on the drop-down list? Only Kandahar members who have both activated their Team Up account and then signed into the Members' Area of this website will appear in the drop down lists. Full details of how to do this are described at the bottom of this FAQ page. Some events are open to non-members.

Can I cancel my Inferno entry? Members who are unable or decide not to race in the Inferno will be refunded their entry fee minus a £35 administration fee up until 3rd December.  It is forbidden to offer your start place to anyone else. Start numbers are personal. If you need to cancel your place, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so that someone on the waiting list can benefit.

What start number will I get?  Inferno bib numbers are generated by the Inferno race office and depend on your best performance in the last three years.  First-time racers and anyone who has not competed for three years will start at the back of the field (sometimes an advantage). Remember to let the race office know if you have changed your name since you last raced. Kandahar race numbers are seeded on K race performances.

How do I receive my lift pass discount?  Inferno entrants receive a discount coupon for their lift pass.  These coupons will be available to collect from the K Clubhouse during Clubhouse hours (17:00-19:00) from Saturday evening onwards.  To enquire about other times of collection, please contact the Inferno Week Clubhouse Manager at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

What equipment do I need?  A helmet is compulsory for racing and must conform to the European Standard CE 1077 (aka EN 1077). The Kandahar and Inferno races are non-FIS so other equipment restrictions do not apply.  For instance, Inferno competitors can race in their normal ski clothing on recreational skis or, if they are comfortable and proficient to do so, may opt for catsuits and race skis. The range of abilities is very wide and so too is the array of attire.

Catsuits can be hired for Inferno Week from the Kandahar shop, or you can purchase your own from Incline Sports (order by early October to guarantee delivery by mid January). Rental catsuits can be collected from, and returned to, the K Clubhouse during Inferno Week. Most other equipment can be hired in Mürren, but advance reservation is strongly recommended.

Is improvement in Inferno results recognised?  Absolutely. The Hulse-Palmer Cup is a team competition based on improved performance in the Inferno downhill. See Kandahar Races for more information.

Do you offer any race training during Inferno Week?  Yes. Two days of Club race training will be offered at the beginning of Inferno Week, this will include GS gate training. For more informtaion, visit Kandahar Racing who will be running the days.

Is there an Inferno course inspection?  Yes, the Inferno course is opened for inspection the day before the race and we strongly recommended ALL racers to inspect the course.  Details about Kandahar-led inspection groups will be announced at the Kandahar drinks party on the Thursday in Murren.

When will I receive my Diamond Devil?  The Diamond Devil is awarded a racer who has completed 12 Infernos and accrued 20 points (1 pt for bronze, 3 pts for silver). Check with Inferno Office (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and, if they confirm that you qualify, inform the Kandahar Inferno Week Director. Athletes who achieve the qualifying criteria are also awarded the Roberts of Kandahar Challenge Cup.

What about race insurance?  Race insurance will not be available from the Inferno Race Office in 2024. You are wholly responsible for your own insurance and for ensuring your policy covers you for the activities you will take part in during Inferno Week. Standard insurance does not typically include ski racing. Visit the Insurance page to find insurers who may provide Inferno-specific cover. Please double check the policies as these are subject to change.

Can I bring new racers?  Yes, but they will need to become Kandahar members before entering the Inferno through the Club. We hope new members join with the intention of remaining long-term Kandahar members; the Club discourages people joining for just one Inferno. Go to the New Membership Application page for details on how to nominate friends for membership.

Where can I stay?  There are many hotels and chalets in Mürren that offer racers 'low season' prices. Call Mürren Tourist Office on 0041 33 856 8686 or www.muerren.ch to find out more.

How can I help my friend register for the Kandahar website?  In order to use the Members' Area of the website, and appear on drop-down lists so they can be entered for Kandahar events at Inferno Week, members need to follow these instruction. Please send these to any Kandahar friends or family members who have not yet done so:
